A cheque is the oldest payment instrument still in everyday use: a signed paper order to pay that tells your bank (the paying bank) to move money from your account to whoever you name. For three centuries it was settled by physically moving the paper around. Today the paper barely moves at all — but the legal idea is unchanged.
